The Washington Post reported that Maples' assistant said the mother and daughter just had $300 budgeted for their hair and makeup. Kelly explained that her rate is higher, only eventually agreed to be paid $200 with an additional $150 going to a makeup creative person. This is when Kelly was asked if she and the makeup artist would provide their services complimentary of charge, with the promise of being promoted on Maples' social media.

"I was stunned," said Kelly, who declined the offer. "I told them... I work for a fee, not for free."

She added, "There are people who make far less than they do who pay full toll... Information technology seemed similar they were trying to see how much they could go for gratuitous based on their names."
